People frequently ask why I give away so many booklets, so I decided to write an explanation. In 1956, I was in the US Army stationed in Germany. I separated from my unit so I could spend some time in Italy, with my family.
It was during this time in Italy that I traveled to see Padre Pio. I was there eleven days and it was a blessing for me every minute of it. I purchased some books at a store very close to his church. One of the books is the one I am printing now.
In 1957 I returned to the United States. I was buying this booklet by mail from San Giovanni Rotondo and giving it away to people. I could afford only a few hundred at a time for my finances were very poor. I barely had money for my return trip to America.
By 1962, my financial situation had improved. I had built a two-story building with a shop downstairs and two bedrooms upstairs. I was doing very well as a self-employed plumber with one assistant.
That same year, due to many spiritual influences in my life, I transformed my shop to a foster home for paralyzed boys forgotten by parents and friends. I named it Casa Padre Pio. By 1971, all of the residents of Casa Padre Pio were self-sufficient and had left to live on their own.
In 1992, I helped a friend to set up a newspaper press. In return for my free labor, I learned a little about printing and its machinery. By 1994 I had set up a little print shop in my own home where I can do my own printing.
Why do I do this? It is a devotion to Padre Pio, a thanksgiving to my Lord and my beautiful Heavenly Mother. Let us remember her with flowers on Mother's Day. One Rose Will Do.
